Flying Workshop tells stories—funny, bold, fantastical and true.

We devise screen media, publishing and real-world experiences with top creative and industry partners.

Our focus on young people and families gives our projects heart and purpose. Every idea—quirky or profound—embraces the diversity and optimisim of our audiences.

2026 This year, we’re quietly forgoing all external work. But listen carefully, and you’ll hear us as we develop a number of promising stories for the future.

Our adventures

Best Bugs Forever

Our first animation follows the escapades of a run-down motel’s community (or is it an infestation?). Our cockroach hero, the relentlessly-upbeat Eddy, is always ready with a group hug’ for friends Mo, Wilberforce, Pebbledash and Louie. Together, they’re about to put the crunch back in shagpile.

The show was commissioned by The Walt Disney Company, which added its characteristic vibrancy and polish. The series was animated and produced by the Academy-Award®-nominated studio, Je Suis Bien Content.

Viewers across the world have enjoyed the fifty-two episodes made in six languages. It’s screened on France TV, The Disney Channel, Australia’s ABC and Prime Video.

Our people

Sharing a creative goal

Working together for over twenty years, our tiny team represents an informal alliance between The Open Group and NPW Studios. During that time, we’ve enjoyed the support of industry mentors and talented contributors.

Nathan Peter Wong
Nathan Peter Wong
Project Developer, Writer and Concept Artist

nathan@flyingworkshop.com

Nathan started as a freelance book illustrator and designer, before moving into photography and film.

He is the founder and Creative Director of NPW Studios, a respected full-service design, photography and video production studio in Sydney. His clients have included the world’s favourite beauty, coffee and home appliances brands.

Nathan is now an internationally published illustrator, has worked on over 350 campaigns and 100 TV commercials for L’Oreal Luxe brands (Australia and New Zealand), was commissioned to design and illustrate the 2019 Limited Edition Nespresso Iced Coffee global campaign Unexpected summer.

His witty and skilful drawings, models and animations have enlivened Flying Workshop’s characters, settings and concept proposals. Nathan continues to devise his own books, products and entertainment experiences. In his spare time(!), he’s a musician and singer-songwriter.

Stuart Gibson
Project Developer, Writer and Researcher

stuart@flyingworkshop.com

Training in teaching, drama and journalism advanced Stuart’s interest in books, the arts and media—often with a focus on young people. He began work as an administrator and marketer for leading arts companies and venues in Sydney and London

His knack for vibrant writing and design was welcomed at Scholastic Australia, where he promoted educational and children’s books. In 2002 Stuart established a publishing consultancy which has provided editorial and design for 160 books with some 500,000 copies in print.

His work as founder of The Open Group centres on themes of storytelling, childhood, education, creativity, design and innovation.

Please be reassured that Stuart’s computer is not currently on fire: that’s his smoky Lapsang Souchong tea.

Peter Hilton
Project Developer and Industry Advisor

peter@flyingworkshop.com

When young, Peter quickly recognised the power of storytelling.

After joining a progressive youth theatre, Peter honed his quick wit, improvisation and writing skills. His ear for dialogue and accents counted, but an empathy for others did most to ground his portrayals. Later training in Community and Educational Theatre saw Peter encourage the trust and esteem of disenfranchised young people as they told their own stories.

Peter’s knowledge of theatre and television extends across the uk, us and Australia. He’s drawn to muscular, character-driven drama.

Alongside his own work, Peter’s career in the arts, heritage and tourism sectors has included roles at The Sydney Opera House, London’s Barbican Centre, York Museums Trust and Madame Tussauds.

Peter is known for his humour, humane insight and good judgement.
